Medical Education – A Continual Process
January 28th, 2010 by admin
For many careers, you just need to learn a certain amount of information and then you can do your job. You might need to get a degree or a certificate of some type, or pass a licensing exam. However, with a medical career the educational process is never ending. This is because there are always new advancements being made that you need to keep up with.
The first step is obviously getting into a university that offers a medical degree, such as the Bachelor of Surgery or the Bachelor of Medicine in the United Kingdom, and completing the course of study satisfactorily so that you will be awarded the appropriate degree.
Once the degree is earned, those receiving a medical education need to do further clinical studies or practice before they are allowed to practice unsupervised. This means a couple more years of supervised work practicing medicine. During this time doctors usually spend time learning more about a number of different specialties which they might want to pursue. This helps them determine the specialty they are interested in, as well as giving them experience to help them should they become general practitioners.
After completing the clinical phase of a medical education doctors can practice on their own without direct supervision. Some open up their own practices, while many take jobs in hospitals or clinics. However, many continue on with their studies in order to gain a specialization, which can take a number of further years of study depending on the specialty and the country where they are practicing medicine. Some also decide to do research and get further degrees, which can add years onto the educational process.
Even if a doctor should decide not to specialize, the medical education process is not complete. Most countries require something called Continuing Medical Education, or CME. Doctors are required to take a number of additional courses or to take advantage of certain other types of learning opportunities such as conventions and seminars in order to keep up with new developments in their field. Different places require a different amount of credits of this type in order for doctors to keep their licenses to practice.
