At the height of the energy crisis of the 1970s, it seemed there were constant discussions about how our planet was running out of non-renewable resources and how we should find ways to conserve the finite energy supplies we still had before we used them up for good and all. If we did not, our high standard of living, which depended on the use of the previously wide availability of seemingly endless sources of energy, would plummet to an all-time low, and our society would be driven to its knees.
In the 1980s and 1990s, when supplies of fossil fuels began to seem apparently abundant once more, such talk seemed to fall out of fashion especially as energy prices stabilized and consumers felt less economic pressure. Recently, however, our nation’s eyes have been drawn once more to the very real possibility that worldwide fossil fuel supplies could indeed run out one day.
Added to this worry is the fact that perennial instability in some of the world’s most energy-rich regions has again put the squeeze on the pocketbooks of most average Americans, and one gets the feeling that we’re actually living in a twisted rendition of the movie “Back to the Future.” And, of course, our collective burden of worry has not been lightened by the fact that burning fossil fuels to the extent that we have over the past several decades has had a rather traumatic effect on the overall health and well-being of our world.
With such a perfect storm building all around us, it may well be time once again to think about finding alternative energy supplies closer to home – perhaps even right in our very own individual homes.
