What chance to kids in Africa stand against Malaria?

    July 19th, 2010 by admin

I hate seeing those appeals on television where a small child is sat looking barely alive with the symptoms of Malaria, it is horrible and makes me feel guilty for living in the developed world. These poor kids don’t stand a chance being born into a country where they cannot protect themselves against diseases such as malaria and so many of them are just a statistic, living and dieing as children. But what can you do? There are so many millions of them and it is a problem that cannot be solved from the armchair of people watching the appeals.

What makes it worse is that that malaria, which is a huge issue, is not only preventable but it is also curable, yet these poor children do not have the education or means to protect themselves and many do not have parents to look after them either, feeling sick is just another day to them so how would they stand a chance of getting fast treatment should they begin to experience the malaria symptoms? One bite of an infected mosquito can decide whether or not they grow up and even have the chance of living any kind of normal life.

In many areas the need for treatment is huge and the facilities and drugs to treat people with is minimal, how can hospitals choose who to treat and who to turn away? Of course the people with the most severe and advanced symptoms of Malaria should be given priority but at the same time it means thousands of others that are waiting are only edging towards the same life threatening position.
