The Effect of L-Arginine on Erectile Dysfunction
March 25th, 2010 by admin
Male “ED” dysfunction is generally caused by an inability to achieve sufficient pressure of blood in the spongy tissue of the blood vessel to cause improved male performance. In order to achieve this, there must be a good flow of blood in the relevant blood vessels, and if the resistance to blood flow is high enough “ED” results.
L-Arginine is converted to nitric oxide by the action of the nitric acid oxidases, a family of enzymes that break down the amino acid in the vascular endothelial cells. Nitric oxide ultimately reduces the calcium ion concentration in the cells of the blood vessels, and renders them more supple and hence more easily dilated under pressure. What this means is that it takes less pressure to allow more blood to pass through the blood vessels, and hence promote less resistance for male dysfunctions to occur.
Prescription drugs works in very much the same way, although, unlike prescription drugs, L-arginine has to be taken daily for an accumulated effect rather than as a single action supplement. Therefore, the amino acid is more of a supplement to be taken regularly than an emergency action, and those that take it regularly may have fewer general problems with “ED”.
A word of caution for those with low blood pressure, L-arginine may cause blood pressure to drop some which may not be desirable for those with already low blood pressure. L-arginine can also cause cold sores and similar virus related ailments (herpes) to out break more often. For those who suffer from these diseases should avoid l-arginine all together.
The amino acid l-arginine is available in capsule form at your local or internet health food store. Look for name brands like Now Foods or Source Naturals to ensure quality and purity of the product you purchase.
