Earplugs for swimming, in Flandres we say oordopjes zwemmen, are ear protection equipments used to keep the ear from having too much water designed especially for swimming activities and other water sports. Since swimmers are very much susceptible to ear infections due to the irritation brought by the water in frequent intervals, earplugs for swimming are recommended for swimmers and people alike who are frequently and regularly exposed under water. To prevent the infections such as the so called swimmers ear and other water pressure related conditions like ear drum pressure, these earplugs have been a wide trend for swimmers. The signs and symptoms of the above mentioned ear conditions include ear pain and itching, repetitive infections and in worst cases, hearing loss as well. There are a variety of materials used in the production of earplugs - oordopjes in Dutch - like foam, rubber and silicon. The most common misperception is that most swimmers use the wax type of earplug. The wax type of ear piece is not recommended since they are naturally heat sensitive and may melt inside the ear. This melting may do more harm than benefits so you might as well stray away from these wax type era plugs. Earplugs for swimming are engineered to fit in the ear that allows no water to enter. If you are about to get your self one, make sure that the manufacturer is accredited for swimmers’ earplugs and that it fits your ear well. Some of the designs may work for you since people have different ear structures. Be careful to follow the instructions properly in wearing and removing earplugs. Wrong handling of the earplugs for swimming may cause injury to the middle and external ear. Instructions should b e followed to avoid injury to the ear. The maximum amount of use for these earplugs must be two weeks only. Keep in mind that you should not share earplugs with others as this may cause cross contamination. Discard any earplugs that go beyond the recommended duration of use. Swab your earplugs for swimming with alcohol daily after use to sweep away foreign objects and dirt that may have stuck with the earplugs. If you surf to oordoppen then you will be able to see what these devices look like.
