Car Performance Tuning at Home with a Personal Dynomometer
March 19th, 2010 by admin
I know, it sounds crazy that you could have a personal dynamometer for car performance tuning. But it’s not as crazy as it sounds.
There are a lot of products on the market today to help you tune your car’s performance. Most of them are computer chips that either integrate into your car’s computer or have to be attached into the electrical system somewhere.
The problem with most of these performance tuning products are two-fold.
1) Some of them don’t play nice with certain car computers. And you don’t know which ones it might fry until you plug them in and then your $800 car computer is now qualified to be your new boat anchor. A very expensive boat anchor.
2) They only work with late-model cars that have a computer. If you have a pre-90s car that doesn’t have a computer in it, you’re out of luck.
So what are your options?
Sure, you can run to the dyno shop every time you make a change to your car. but that gets awfully expensive real fast. Not to mention you have to work around their schedule and waste time driving there and back.
A better option is Speedicator. It’s literally a micro-camera that fastens to the center of the face of your speedometer and records the car’s performance. You can then download the information into a remote that connects to your computer through a USB.
Then you can use Speedicator’s proprietary software to analyze your car’s performance and graph it over time and use. Now that’s home tuning at it’s best.
